RU-486 is a two-drug abortion cocktail that takes up to 44 days to end unwanted pregnancies and is a back-alley solution in developing countries.

In 2005, the FDA admitted to receiving more than 600 reports of serious complications from the use of RU-486. These complications include bacterial infections, bleeding, ruptured ectopic pregnancies, and death. In July 2005, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed that five American women had died after using RU-486.
