I was baptized at age 12, but then after I was truly saved and born again at age 35, I requested baptism by total immersion as a public testimony to my new birth experience. Baptism does not save us, but it is an act of obedience which identifies us with the body of Christ. For that reason, I believe that it is important to be baptized AFTER salvation.
